This holiday classic tells the tale of the greedy and mean-spirited Ebenezer Scrooge who believes Christmas is a "humbug". He is intent on spending the holiday alone, but instead, the old curmudgeon is visited by otherworldly spirits. But what do the ghosts want? Can a grumpy old miser admit the error in his ways and embrace the spirit of Christmas by learning to love and be loved?
Performances are December 6-15.

Michael Carney (Scrooge) has appeared in several productions in North Carolina, including Henry V , Wait Until Dark, and Peter and the Starcatcher at Cape Fear Regional Theater, Antigone, A Streetcar Named Desire, Titus Andronicus and August:Osage County at the Gilbert Theater, and Sense and Sensibility, Romeo and Juliet, The Cherry Orchard, and Much Ado About Nothing for Sweet Tea Shakespeare. He most recently appeared in Of Good Stock at Theater in the Park in Raleigh. He has also performed onstage in Tennessee, Texas, and California.
Stephen Cain (Fezziwig/Ghost of Christmas Present) is a retired US Army Colonel who now calls Southern Pines home. While living in Belgium, before moving to Southern Pines, Steve appeared in community theater productions of: “The King and I” in the role of the Prime Minister and “Promises, Promises” in the song-and-dance role of a lecherous businessman. Steve also was a nominee for best supporting actor in a regional community theater tournament of plays for his roles in “Scenes from American Life.”
Hannah Kirkpatrick (Ghost of Christmas Past/Ensemble) is enormously proud to be joining the cast of A Christmas Carol. She played the role of Maid Marian in the Missoula Children’s theater rendition of Robin Hood at the Sunrise Theater. Hannah lives in Southern Pines with her parents and three siblings and is homeschooled through the Classical Conversations program. She is in the ninth grade, and her favorite subjects are Science and Debate. Hannah also attends Ball Room dancing courses in the Sandhills. She enjoys volunteering at her church mentoring younger youth and playing recreational sports with her friends. She thanks her family and friends for their love and support. Hannah would also like to thank ENCORE! for allowing her to enjoy this treasured experience.
Josh C. Anderson (Bob Cratchit) is excited to make a return to the stage at Encore! Recent credits include Ichabad Crane (Legend of Sleepy Hollow), George Murchison (A Raisin in the Sun), Black Man (We Are Proud to Present...), Jean Valjean (Les Miserables), and Quadell McCullom (Actions and Objectives). A graduate of UNCG, he has had the honor of working alongside Preston Lane (Triad Stage) and Calandra Hackney (AEA). When offstage, he enjoys playing bass guitar, writing music and playing chess.
Magdalen Dwyer (Mrs. Cratchit) is thrilled to be joining with the cast and crew to bring this iconic Christmas story to life at Encore Theatre! Past credits include The Sound of Music (Maria), Into the Woods (Cinderella’s Mother), and the Bacchae (Bacchante). When Magdalen is not on stage she enjoys cooking, dancing and singing with her daughter, speaking French, yoga, travelling with her family, playing with her dogs, reading, stand-up paddle boarding, watching movies with her husband, and riding her longboard. She hopes you enjoy the show and are inspired to spread Christmas joy to all this holiday season.
Patrick Holt (Fred/Dixon) is titillated to be making his first appearance on the Encore stage as Fred in A Christmas Carol. A Sanford native, Patrick can mostly be found performing and teaching at the Temple Theatre, but it always excited to pursue new theatre opportunities. Some of his most recent roles include The Artful Dodger in "Oliver!", Tom Sawyer in "Big River", and Sonny Latieri in "Grease."
James Johnson (Marley/Joe) has been working in some capacity in theatre since his first performance at the Southern Pines Theatre Company, playing Pvt. Arnold Epstein when he was just 17. Since that time James has played leading roles in performances of The Rocky Horror Show, Assassins, The Shape of Things, The Seagull, Plaza Suite, Stage Kiss and The Waiting Room, at the Gilbert Theatre, Sweet Tea Shakespeare Company and Fayetteville Technical Community College. James has also served as a frequent playwright and director, as well as sometime crew member for a number of other productions. Outside of direct involvement with theatre, James has made his career in journalism specializing in coverage of the arts, particularly as editor-in-chief of the Fayetteville FEED magazine. Currently James is making his living as a graphic artist, and developing an audio play series featuring North Carolina actors and musicians as well as narration from actress Rachael Leigh Cook.
Stephen Cameron (Young Ebeneezer), a Sanford native, is thrilled to join the Encore Center for their production of A Christmas Carol. You may have previously seen him as Brom Bones in Legend of Sleepy Hollow. A few of his previous shows include My Fair Lady, Anything Goes, and various educational tours, as well as assisting in the technical department of many more. As an actor, writer, and florist he appreciates every opportunity to share his art with others.
Becca Vourvoulas (Charwoman, Gentlewoman) is new to North Carolina and is thrilled to become a part of this theatre community. Local audiences may already have seen her in productions of Peter and the Starcatcher and Annie, both at Cape Fear Regional Theatre. She holds a Bachelor's of Fine Arts from Penn State's Musical Theatre program and has performed all over the US and abroad. As a theatre and dance educator, Becca works with students of all levels and choreographs for both educational and professional theatre.
Sarah Lankford (Laundress, Gentlewoman, Music Director) As a native of Charlotte, NC, Sarah grew up in a culturally rich environment and attended The Northwest School of the Arts from the time she was 11. Since that age, she intensively studied dance, music, and theatre. Sarah earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music and Psychology at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and a Master of Arts in Education from Gardner-Webb University. She has provided private instruction in violin, piano, voice and guitar for over 15 years and worked as the music director for numerous local theaters. Sarah is excited to be part of this production here in the Sandhills and would like to thank her husband, children, and mother for all their support!
Sara Damude (Mrs. Fezziwig) is very proud to be a part of the inaugural season at the Encore Center and to share it with two of her four kids! She has enjoyed performing since a young age and past productions include Mary Poppins, Jesus Christ Superstar, Camelot and many more. Sara has a passion for arts education and has recently directed Elf the Musical, Jr. and Lion King, Jr. for Carolina Performing Arts Studio. Being on stage with her kids has been a great experience and one that she hopes continues for years to come!
Claire Fuller (Belle/Mourner 3), a 14 year old freshman in high school, is thrilled to be playing Belle and Mourner 3 in the Encore Center’s production of “A Christmas Carol”. Prior to joining this cast, Claire has had roles as the Genie in Missoula Children’s Theater’s “ Aladdin”, as Joanna in Capital Baptist’s Homeschool Theater “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”, as Benny Southstreet in Aldersgate Children Community Theater’s production of “Guys and Dolls Jr.” and most recently as Petra in Metropolitan School of the Arts production of “ The Taming of the Shrew”. In her spare time, Claire enjoys dancing, singing and hanging out with friends and family.
Liliana Whitaker (Martha Cratchit) is a 13-year-old performer with an unquenchable passion for theatre. She has been cast in twelve plays, including Tinker Bell in Peter Pan; Oaken in Frozen Jr.; Jill in Jack and the Beanstalk; and Robin Hood in Robin Hood. She has sung in small choirs for large audiences in Chicago, NY, GA, NC, and SC. Liliana studies a classical curriculum and two instruments—violin and mandolin. Additionally, she avidly reads and writes books and short stories. She thanks her family for all the love, support, and chai tea lattes they’ve given her.
Alice Fuller (Belinda Cratchit), age 9, is elated to be playing Belinda Cratchit in the Encore Center’s “ A Christmas Carol”. This is Alice’s first main role in a play and she has loved every minute of it and thankful for this opportunity. In her spare time Alice enjoys doing gymnastics, arts and crafts and hanging out with her friends and family.
Emma Stephen (Tiny Tim) is 6-1/2 years old and a first grader at Pinehurst Elementary. She loves math, art and music. She is always running around the house singing and dancing! She attends Seven Lakes Dance in West End where she is on a competition Tap team as well as study ballet. She loves flipping on the trampoline and takes a TNT- tumbling and trampoline class at Sandhills Gymnastics. She also took part this summer in two theatre camps at the Sunrise Theatre in Southern Pines where she fell in love with the theatre! She currently takes musical theatre classes at Encore and is loving every minute!
Stephen Makie (Peter Cratchit) is excited to be performing in “A Christmas Carol”. Stephen is 12 years old and performed in the last 4 local shows presented by the Missoula Children’s Theater as well as “The Greatest Showman” at New Century Middle School. He attended the Missoula Children’s Theater East Shore Summer Camp in Missoula, MT during the summer of 2019. He loves to sing (he is a member of the All-County Middle School Choir), play the piano, camp, cook and spend time with his friends and family.
Jocelyn Lankford (Molly/Ensemble) is excited to join to the Encore stage. Her previous regional theatre roles include Annie, Jojo in Suessical, Young Cosette in Les Miserable, Tin-Man in Wizard of Oz, Flounder in The Little Mermaid, Veruca Sault in Willy Wonka, Gladys in BCPE, Chip in Beauty and the Beast, Jovie in Elf, and Zazu in Lion King Jr. She would like to thank her teachers at Encore for all their time and effort in helping her develop as a singer, dancer and actor.
Mykeala Kirkpatrick (Dick/Mourner 2/Ensemble) is extremely proud to be joining the cast of A Christmas Carol. Mykaela lives in Southern Pines with her parents and three siblings and is homeschooled through the Classical Conversations program. She is in the eleventh grade, and her favorite subjects are Art and Literature. Mykaela also attends foundational drama classes at the Temple Theater. She enjoys playing music, illustrating animation and volunteering at her church with the technical crew. She thanks her family and friends for their love and support. Ethan Lankford (Young Ebeneezer) is looking forward to his role of Young Ebeneezer. He currently studies acting, musical theater, Hip-Hop, and guitar at the Encore Center. His recent roles include Les in Newsies, Michael in Elf Jr., and Ed in Lion King Jr. all with our sister studio, Carolina Performing Arts Studio in Cameron. He has also held multiple lead roles in local Jr productions at neighboring regional theatres.
Ashleigh Prather (Fan/Ensemble) Ashleigh Prather is a sophomore at Pinecrest High School. She works at Once Upon A Fairy Tale, a company that provides characters for birthday parties. Since working there in September, she's been everything from a princess to a superhero! She has been acting and singing since kindergarten, and currently taking theatre 1 this semester. Along with theatre, she is a member of multiple clubs: Key club (Key Club is a club that provides volunteer opportunities and helps track hours), creative writing club, Science Olympiad, and the positive psychology club. She is also part of the JSOC (joint special operations command) collaboration with the Red Hat Shelton Challenge and NC State, which builds the future leaders of tomorrow.
Morgan Hubbard (Jack/Ensemble) is 12 years old and lives in Sanford, North Carolina with her parents, 3 siblings, and her dog named Duke. Her dad is in the military so she has moved around a lot. She was born in Germany and throughout her life has lived in 5 different states and 1 different country. Morgan enjoys listening to musicals, especially Hamilton, and playing the ukulele and piano. She has had roles in the musicals Aladdin and Elf Jr. and also participates in her school's music program.
Hadley Luckie (Robert/Ensemble) has been in various school musicals including Music Man, as Alma Hix, Madagascar, as Private the Penguin, and will be featured in the upcoming Seussical, as part of the ensemble. She is also known for her roles as an orphan in Annie, a lead Oompa Loompa in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Yun the elder in Mulan, and ensemble in Beauty Lou and the Country Beast. Hadley is an avid reader and has straight A’s in school. She has plans to be either an animal right’s advocate or a professional actress.
Sydney Damude (Ensemble) would like to thank the entire production team for letting her be a part of this exciting show! She is thankful to share the stage with her best friend Josie. This is her third time performing on stage, previously she played Oscar in Newsies and in the ensemble of Lion King, Jr. Sydney is happy to share the stage with her mom and her little brother.
Lillian Fuller (Ensemble), a 13 year old jr. high school student, is excited to be cast as a narrator in the Encore Center’s production of “ A Christmas Carol”. Lillian has played the role of Indian Chief in Capital Baptist’s Theater’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”. In Lillian’s spare time, she enjoys playing soccer and hanging out with friends and family.
Silas Damude (Ignorance) is making his stage debut in A Christmas Carol! He has been looking forward to this for a very long time as he comes from a family of performers. He has worked on the stage crew as a "backstage ninja" for productions for Carolina Performing Arts Studio and placed the coffee cup just right every time. He loves being with his mom and sister on stage and has loved coming to rehearsals!
Greta Marie Zandstra (Artistic Director, Costumer) Although an Indiana farm girl at heart, Greta Marie Zandstra has spent much of the last fifteen years living and working in North Carolina. Since earning her undergraduate degree in theatre and dance from Saint Mary’s College/Notre Dame and her graduate degree in dramatic arts from the University of Nebraska, she has had the opportunity to perform, direct, teach, and choreograph at numerous theatres and is looking forward to creating a new artistic home for performers and audience members in the Sandhills.
Becky Podlogar (Stage Manager) is excited to be the Stage Manager for Encore’s inaugural season. Although she has spent the majority of her life working in healthcare, she has felt the pull of the theatre since she was merely 5 years old, meeting her husband when the two starred together in their kindergarten class’s play in an elementary school gymatorium. It was their last stage production together until he proposed on the same stage 17 years later. Becky is delighted to be stage managing her third production this year, and would like to thank her husband Alex (married now 21 years), daughter Allison, and Sarah and Greta for their love, support and encouragement. Becky is thrilled to be part of the joy of theatre and performing arts in Downtown Southern Pines.
Carly Mikulka (Assistant Stage Manager) is currently a freshman at Sandhills Community College working towards completing her Associate of Arts degree. You may have recently seen her acting in the Encore Center's production of Legend of Sleepy Hollow as Geoffrey, Van Lacker & Gunpowder. She hopes to transfer to a 4-year university next fall to complete a degree in Theatre Education. She has been seen most recently as Ursula in The Little Mermaid at Union Pines High School. She would like to thank her friends and family for always supporting her and everyone at the Encore Center for giving her this wonderful opportunity.
Ariel Humphrey (Turkey Boy/Jane) made her acting debut in 2015, and was most recently seen in CPAS’s Elf Jr. She is excited to be returning to the stage in this spectacular production, and would like to thank everyone for the opportunity and support! Merry Christmas! What?!?
